Lightning Strikes
Made by: Karen Birkmeier
Lightning struck the church steeple June 7, 1977. Fortunately, the building was empty and no one was hurt. Building insurance covered the cost of repairs such as closing the opening in the roof, installing temporary roofing, cleaning and drying the inside of the building including carpet and pews where firemen poured water to put out the fire, and installing a new roof and trim. This tool of worship and service, as founding pastor Sauer referred to the sanctuary, continues to beckon travelers on busy West Market Street during the day and, with the spotlight focused on the cross, during the night as well.
