    Middle & High School Youth

    Six Flags - August 14 - Cost $12.50 9:00 a.m.

    Collecting Quarters

The Youth are collecting quarters all summer for the World Hunger Fund and Stand with Africa.

Because the summer is coming to a close, I would like to take the time to inform the congregation about the new youth schedule which will begin in September.  On Sundays, middle school youth will meet in the Youth Room at 9:15am for games, food, and biblical study. I will also have the opportunity to interact with the middle school youth on Wednesdays, starting Septem ber 10, when Pastor Jean and  "team-up" to teach Confirmation Class.

High school students will meet in the Youth Room on Sundays at 10:45am for breakfast and conversations about current top- ics.  Sometimes we will go to a restaurant instead of staying on church grounds; this may pro- vide for a more relaxed environ- ment for discussion.

I hope you enjoy the remaining days of summer!  I look forward to seeing you all in September.

    Rally Day

    Choir Member Biographies

    Marilyn Wilson

Music has always been a part of Marilyn's life. Her mother and father were singers as well as her older brother, Bill. Growing up in Greenwich, Cinnecticut, Marilyn's family attended St. Paul's Evangical Lutheran Church where she sang in the junior, girls. and senior choirs. She was also a member of the elite Senior Chorus at Greenwich High School. Marilyn and her brother, Bill, both studied voice and performed many times in church and at various music recitals. Marilyn married Hal in 1967 and moved overseas where she sang in a number of church choirs, and was the soloist at the Beirut College for Women.

Goodyear brought the Wilson family back to the USA briefly in 1974. She immediately joined Faith and has been a member ever since. Unfortunately, her choral experience at Faith only lasted one year before Goodyear transferred them overseas again. There was a 15-year hiatus before Goodyear finally brought the Wilsons back to Akron. Marilyn has served Faith in many diffrent areas. Besides her membership in choir, she volunteers her services on the Altar Guild, was a member of the recent Pastor's Search Committee, and the Music Committee.

Marilyn's dream, upon returning to the USA, was to get a degree in education. She is a graduate of The University of Akron and is presently teaching 7th grade Language Arts and Reading at Old Trail School. Besides her family, which has always come first in her life, musical is the big second. When she isn't teaching, she is in Cleveland singing with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus of which she has been a member for the past 14 years.

Marilyn and Hal have two wonderful sons, Craig and Trevor. Having been brought up living a nomadic life style, their sons live in Iowa and California. It makes it nice for visiting, but very hard to see Craig's lovely boys, Kyle, Connor and Zachary.

Marilyn's favorite pastimes, when she isn't singing that is, are gardening, needlework, knitting, and hanging out with good friends.

    Chuck Baltes

Chuck attended Faith Lutheran Church in 1958 while it was meeting in Fairlawn Elementary School and became a member in February 1959. His first remembrance is of Luther League cleaning and mowing the site for our new church prior to ground breaking. He started singing in a combined Youth-Adult choir during the summer of 1960.

After a year away at Wittenberg College he transferred to the University of Akron and started singing regularly with the choir in the fall of 1961. At that time Margaret Lange was the Director and June Magnuson was the Organist. He remembers Milan Rolick, Mitch & Ginny Greenawalt, and Sally Frankenfield Hauth (still members here at Faith) from those great formative choir years.

After some absences for military and work he still tries to sing with the choir, if only loud, not necessarily on key.

    Church Keys

Church Keys Are Being Replaced Complete Form To Receive Key Card

If you have a church key and would like to have continued access to the building, please stop in the church office and complete a form to request a "key card" for the new electronic access system that is being installed. Once the form is turned in, and approved, a card can programmed for your use. Later this summer all outside locks will be changed and existing keys will no longer open any outside doors.

If you cannot stop in between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, please call and request that a form be mailed to you or placed in your church mailbox.

PLEASE do not request a form from church staff on Sunday mornings!

    Staff Update

New Dimensions: Growing in Discipleship Update

Faith church council selected members Randy Cole, John Dial, Robin Horn, Ken Jakubec, Shirley Pope and Sara Shook to a call committee for the purpose of selecting a Minister of Christian Growth and Discipleship. Pastor Jean is working closely with the committee. The first meeting was held Wednesday, July 16.

Robin Horn has agreed to chair the committee and Randy Cole will act as a council liaison. The first steps in the process include creating interview questions and working with the Northeastern Ohio Synod office to find candidates.

The committee will meet again in August and hopes to select a candidate by this fall. An update of the committee's progress will be included each month in the Beacon of Faith. If you are aware of a potential candidate for the position, please contact Robin Horn or Pastor Jean.

    Facilities Manager

The Facilities Manager Search Team (Bob Hartz and Chuck Baltes) have been hard at work seeking a replacement for Bill Osborn. Bill will be retiring at the end of August. They have been conducting interviews, and are in the process of finalizing their recommendation for Pastor Jean and Church Council.

We give thanks for their faithful and efficient work.

    American Red Cross

Demand for blood is growing faster than ever. Our supply can't keep up. That's why your donation can mean the difference between life and death.

    School Supplies Project

Summer has just begun, but we're already thinking about the re-opening of school at the end of August. Once again, Summit County is asking for our help in their annual campaign to collect and package school supplies. These donations provide school supplies to children in needy client families and to foster children. The goal is to help more than 1,000 children start the year with the necessary tools needed. The last day to bring in these supplies is Sunday, August 4th

    Please help us! Thank you!

    Thank You

Pastor Jean and the Congregation of Faith Lutheran:

Thank you so much for honoring my mother, Elsie Deason, with a prayer shawl. I was so glad to be in town last week so that I could attend the service. My parents raised us in the church and my faith has given me strength and comfort in both the happy and sad times of my life. Mom is blessed to have so many people in her life that care and pray for her. Her improvement since being moved to St. Lukes is nothing short of a miracle. It is a testament to what good care and the power of prayer can do. Thank you again for remembering Elsie with a prayer shawl.

    Sincerely,

    Brenda Deason and Family
