    Its not raining . . .

That is what I said to myself as I drove into Fairlawn on Saturday, July 17 for our Great American Bake Sale. So many people (well over 100) had worked so many hours (over 1500) for such a good cause. So of course, even though I had to turn on my wipers from time to time I KNEW it COULDN'T be raining!

Gray skies and "mist" not withstanding, it turned out to be a great day. From a petting zoo thanks to Leo's Ark and a toy station thanks to Toys R Us, to hours and hours of beautiful songs and ministry from our marvelous Flashlight Band, to delicious hot dogs and lemonade, everyone had fun and God was glorified.

Congregation and community members alike enjoyed the day, bought bakery goods, and got to see FLC as a family of God reaching out to others. What could be better than that? The final figures aren't in yet, but as this goes to press we know that we raised over $2000 to help feed hungry children and we will also get some matching funds from Thrivent Financial.

A special thank you to Margie Jelar who brought us the idea in the first place and was our chairperson. Thanks to Sheila, Kurt, and the band who jumped on the bandwagon to provide free concerts; to Stephanie and Jason Short who came forward to "help" and ended up as co chairs with Margie, to Wendy and Leo who managed to run a lemonade stand, petting zoo, and pony rides and make it look easy, and to all of you …everyone… for your help, commitment and support. You helped, you baked, you bought, and if you didn't do any of those things, you prayed! Thanks again.

    Youth

    Summer Middle School Retreat (all those entering 7th & 8th grade) Wednesday, August 4 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

We'll have a chance to hike, canoe, do the "low ropes" course, see all of Leo's animals (finally) and lots more. It will be a great chance to continue to fellowship and strengthen our foundation as a group.

The retreat will be held on Wendy and Leo's property in Sullivan. Don't worry, transportation will be provided! Please plan to attend!

    Explorer's Club Teachers In Service

If you are interested in Explorer's Club or a teacher or helper for them, please grab your calendar and reserve the morning of August 28…..hurry up! Do it now! August 28 is when we have planned the teacher's kick off for our fall Explorer's Club.

You will learn some great tricks for working with kids of each age range, you will hear ideas as to how to be more effective in your role as teacher/mentor/friend, AND we will feed you!

We will start promptly at 9 a.m.and you will be out by 11 a.m. We appreciate so much your willingness to serve God in this most important ministry. Your attendance at this training session is important. Even if you've taught 50 years you can still learn something!

Again, Saturday, August 28 from 9 -11 a.m. Child care and refreshments will be provided. See you there!

    What Exactly Is CLN???

You may have heard fellow members say that certain events were sponsored by CLN and have asked yourself, "What is CLN?" Let us explain. CLN stands for Congregation Life & Nurture. Our ministry team is really two teams in one. The first being congregational life, and the second being congregational nurture.

Congregational Life is committed to promoting fellowship within the congregation by planning activities that bring members together from all services at Faith. The team provides a venue for Faith members to bring friends and family for Christian based fellowship in a social setting. Some of the past events that we have sponsored that you may be most familiar with are: The Mother Daughter Banquet, Rummage Sale, and the annual Tinsel & Tea. We also handle numerous other activities throughout the year, including planning and organizing receptions held at the church for various events such as retirements, etc. Our goal is to gather together all members of Faith Lutheran in relaxed fun filled settings to help encourage new friendships.

Congregational Nurture is committed to providing comfort and nurture to Faith members in times of need. We are dedicated to preparing bereavement luncheons/dinners for those who have lost loved ones. This is an invaluable service we offer to our members during some of the most difficult times of their lives. Our ministry team also sponsors the prayer shawl program, which gives comfort and warmth to those who are ill. Faith members lovingly pray while the shawls are being created. The shawls are then passed among the congregation and special prayers are said for the recipients. This year, we are planning to add baby blankets for baptism ceremonies and more colorful lap throws for sick children and teens.

Who is CLN? CLN is open to all members of Faith's congregation. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm in the church library. We would love to have you join us to help in fulfilling our ministry. If you cannot commit to a scheduled ministry team, please consider offering your help in the nurture area. This is an "on-call" ministry that can truly be a blessing in giving.

    School Supplies

Summer has just begun, but we're already thinking about the re-opening of school at the end of August. Once again, Summit County Children's Services is asking for our help in their annual campaign to collect and package school supplies. These donations provide school supplies to children in needy client families and to foster children. The goal is to help more than 1,000 children start the year with the necessary tools. The last day to bring in these supplies is Sunday, August 8. Please help us! Thank you! The Service Committee

Suggestions: For kindergarten through Middle/High School

    IT'S ALMOST TIME

Very soon it will be time for the nominating committee to convene so that they can develop and present a slate of Church Council nominees. People on Church Council need to have time to attend worship and monthly meetings. They should also take seriously the statement in our vision to change from followers to disciples. In order to become better disciples, they need to be committed to personal spiritual growth via daily devotions, attendance at a Bible or Book study, or other learning and leadership opportunities. We are approaching very exciting times in our congregation, and the role of a council person will be instrumental in helping us grow. Please pray for God to be with the nominating committee and potential council nominees as we prepare for this election.

Do you think you are a success in life?

Success, of course, is measured in many ways: wealth, happiness, good health just to name a few. Starting in the fall Carolyn will be leading another Book/Bible study on John C. Maxwell's newest book, "Today Matters - 12 daily practices to guarantee tomorrow's success" She has read many of Pastor Maxwell's books and has always found his work very insightful and helpful. If you feel you might be able to be just a bit more successful, please join us as we read, study, and discuss the possibilities! Begins Wednesday. September 22 and ends November 3.
