BECOMING ADULT DISCIPLES
Plan now to attend an adult learning experience beginning in September. You can attend the worship of your choice and at the alternate worship time there will be one or two small groups available as well as our Kinship Café. You do NOT need to be a Theologian or Biblical scholar to attend, we're all in this journey together as we struggle to make the change from followers to disciples. Please plan now to include learning time as well as worship time on Sunday morning, and stay tuned for details in the September Beacon of Faith.
We give thanks . . . for the musical gifts of Faith members who will be providing special music during worship this month: Jeff Mallison, Shirley Kmet, Marilyn Wilson, Men's Choir
Note to Ladies
Serving on the Altar: There have been some minor revisions to the instructions for those who prepare the Altar for worship. You will find the newly revised instruction sheets posted in the Sacristy. If you should desire to have a copy for your personal use, there are extra copies available in the Sacristy. Any questions, contact Lucy Kmet (330-699-9780).
Pat Belaney
We Welcome Pat Belaney as the new Handbell Director of Faith Lutheran Church
Hi! I'm Pat Belaney and Pastor Jean has asked me to tell you a little bit about myself.I was born and grew up in East Liverpool (just south of Youngstown). After high school I attended Muskingum College for two years and then began teaching kindergarten at the age of nineteen. I later received a B.S. in Education with a minor in music from Kent State University and a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision from Western Reserve University. In addition to kindergarten, I taught second grade, elementary music and was an elementary music supervisor prior to coming to the Akron area to become principal of Arrowhead Elementary School in Copley.
I also have substituted on organ, directed both adult and children's choirs, and taught children's music theory based on a course from the Cleveland Institute of Music. After retiring from the public schools, I organized and trained the bell choir at Montrose Zion United Methodist Church. I also direct the bell choir of Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Medina. I have attended many national seminars for handbell directors in order to receive training from the leaders in this area of work.
I'm pleased with the interest in bells being shown at your church. I will start a beginning group on Monday, September 12, and offer a course on bell basics for four to six weeks. On Wednesday, September 7, I will meet with experienced ringers. In addition to learning bell music, I will teach some advanced techniques. We will also discuss other things that the group can do such as quartets, duets, and solo ringing. I have arranged for a solo ringer to play at your services on August 21. I especially like to teach solo ringing and hope some of you will be interested in this. Eventually I hope to put both groups together and they will meet on Wednesdays. Rehearsals will begin at 7 p.m. These times may be adjusted according to your needs.I'm looking forward to meeting you. If there are people who are interested, but have not indicated this to Pastor Jean, please let her know so that we will have your name. Pat
WATER PASS OUT
FOURTH OF JULY WATER PASS OUT A HUGE SUCCESS
Over 40 people gathered to pass out the 1000 bottles of water to hot, thirsty parade watchers and participants. We were greeted with smiles and "thank you" and lots of folks said what a good idea is was. We are planning to expand this great "ministry of refreshment" next year. Special thanks to Ken Jakubec and the people from Pepsico, Twinsburg for getting us a donation of 500 bottles. Special thanks to Chris and Anita Sears for picking up the water.

Parking Lot, Restrooms, Doors
To Receive Face Lift - During August several property related projects will be in process at the church. They include: Repair and sealing of the parking lot; Remodeling of the men's and women's restrooms on the first floor, near the east entrance; Refinishing of all "blonde" doors on the first floor; Refinishing of the coat racks to match the doors; Painting of the mailboxes to match stain on doors and racks; Painting of bulletin board frames and several door frames
These projects have been approved by the Church Council and funding is coming from the Building and Grounds Fund and a $5000 donation from the Preschool, for which we are thankful. Because of these projects it will be more important than ever to schedule any activities or meetings taking place at the church through the church office.
Sow and Grow Update
The Endowment Committee extends its sincere "THANKS" to the entire Faith congregation for the prayers and financial contributions in support of the Sow and Grow Campaign. So far this year, the Endowment Fund has received cash contributions totaling $32,500--- in pursuit of its goal of $50,000.
The current campaign continues through Faith's 50th anniversary celebration in September. Since only income from the Fund is used for charitable purposes, a gift to the Endowment Fund "gives" year after year. If it is within your means, please consider a gift. Pamphlets are located outside of the Fellowship Hall or you can see any committee member for more information.
Your Endowment Committee, Bill Evans, Don Johnson, Ann Snyder Britton, Lowell Unger, Mark Watkins and Pastor Jean Hansen
FAITH GEAR
Our first order of Faith Gear shirts and tote bags are in and look terrific! Soon many will be "sporting" the FLC logo when they attend church functions and hopefully in the community as well. We will be submitting an additional order for Faith Clothing soon, and it's not too late to get yours! Order sheets are on the bulletin board outside Carolyn's office. We do have sample garments to try on and the sample garments can be purchased, too. Call or email Carolyn for more details.
Tutoring - A Family Affair
The new tutoring ministry planned to begin Monday nights this September at Channelwood Community Center in downtown Akron can be a family affair. Teenagers can be very effective tutors. We will begin our tutoring efforts with grades 1-6. Here is an ideal way for families with teenage members to reach out together to help educate struggling children.
It will take one hour per week. The second weekend in September there will be two opportunities (Sunday afternoon September 11 from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. or Monday evening September 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) to receive two hours of training from Cleveland Reads. September 19 we will spend an hour becoming oriented to the facilities at Channelwood and familiar with the books and teaching aids being provided by Building of Hope in the City. The first tutor/student night, September 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. will be a "get acquainted" opportunity. You will meet your student and his/her guardian. Goals will be discussed. Tutoring begins in earnest on October 3. Tutors and students will meet Monday nights from 6:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. during the school year.
Would your family share their talents and their faith this way? Sign up or learn more by calling Zion Lutheran Church (330) 253-3136 or Shirley Duffy (330) 650-6716.
