Trisha Lynn Grady and John Wayne Hannah Jr. will be married at Faith Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 4:30 PM. They ask for your prayers as they begin their new life together.

    Summer Camp

Are you interested in a unique summer camp experience either for your child or for the entire family? Consider a week at one of Ohio's Lutheran Summer Camps. Camp Luther near Conneaut, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie, is now taking reservations for its summer family week programs. Camp Mowana, located just north of Mansfield, is also taking reservations for their summer youth and family programs. There is also a Music Camp, a soccer camp, and an Algonquin Canoe Trip.

Add to the above mix the programs of Camp Frederick near Youngstown with week of rafting, family camping, Miami Valley Outdoor Ministries which have week devoted to singles, Choir Camp, canoe trips and backpacking near Cincinnati, and Lutheran Memorial near Columbus with bicycle trips, night camps, pioneer homesteading and you have quite a diverse mix of summer fun. Brochures are available in the front foyer or by calling the church office.

Did you know that you could register for Summer Camp online at www.lomocamps.org?

    Confirmation Continues

Confirmation classes continue each Wednesday evening throughout May at 6:20 PM. After a six-week break for Lent and Easter, the Confirmation Class returns to complete their last semester this school year. The focus of these last few weeks will be the beginnings of the early church. The class has been studying the sweep of the old and new testaments. Special thanks must be expressed to the parents of our youth who, remembering their vows they made at the time their child's baptism, are now enabling their child to receive what they need for their spiritual development. Please remember our Confirmands in your prayers.

    Confirmation Picnic

The Confirmation Class will end this year on Wednesday evening May 30, 2001 at 6:30 PM with a picnic at the church. Families are asked to bring a potluck. Pastor will supply hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill plus drinks.

    Considering Joining Our Family?

The spring Discover Faith seminar for those wishing to learn about the Christian faith - especially those considering joining Faith Church - is Sunday, June 3, 2001 starting with a pizza lunch at 12:00 PM and concluding at 5:00 PM.

"Discover Faith" is intended for everyone who wishes to grow in their spiritual life especially those contemplating joining our Faith family. The seminar is divided into five parts, "Who is Jesus? Who is the Holy Spirit? Living the Gift, The Call of the Church, and Profile of a Disciple. A special workbook written by Pastor Stan serves as the text. On Sunday, June 11, at 9:15 AM, an orientation session will be held for those making the commitment to join our Faith family. New members will be received later that morning at the 10:45 Celebration service.

The fall Discover Faith seminar will be held next October.

    Easter and Faith

Two Service Ministry projects proved to be highly successful this last month. First a record 130 Easter Baskets were distributed via the Summit County Children's Services this year and our Youth Student Fellowship went door to door the Saturday before Palm Sunday and collected 660 separate cans of food for OPEN M's food pantry. Kudos to both groups for their leadership enabling the impact we at Faith make in our community.

    FROM OUR SEXTON

Upon leaving the building in the evening, PLEASE be sure that all the lights are out--including those in the rest rooms--and the doors are locked. Frequently, Bill Osborn arrives on a weekday morning with hall, fellowship hall, rest room lights, etc. left on the entire night. It is just good management of our resources.

    Current Building Projects

Three short-term projects are being planned in the coming months around the church. 1) The installation of new light fixtures in the south side of the Fellowship Hall replacing the current fixtures that can no longer be repaired; 2) Installation of new drawers in the sacristry; 3) leveling of the back sidewalk.

    Synod News

Northeastern Ohio Synod Assembly May 17-19, 2001 National Bishop H. George Anderson will be the special guest of the Northeastern Ohio Synod when it gathers in assembly at the John S. Knight Center this month. In addition to worship, music, fellowship and business sessions, this year the Synod will once again choose its Bishop for another six year term. Our current Bishop Marcus Miller will be available to serve a second six year term, the maximum any one Bishop may serve.

Recently, Faith was notified that it could send an additional two representatives to the Assembly making a total of four lay members. In addition to Bill and Shirley Pope who were elected at our last Annual Meeting and Pastor Sneeringer ex officio, also representing Faith by appointment of the Church Council will be John Maroni, our youth director.

Synod Meetings at Faith this month

Meeting at Faith May 22 will be the Companion Synod Committee of which Pastor Stan is the current chairperson. They will be discussing the coming visit by the pastor Bethany Lutheran, Akron, the Rev Mark Sherwindt's visit to the Northern Diocese this summer. Also meeting will be the Akron-Wooster Conference clergy with Rev. George Murphy, Lutheran pastor teaching minister at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Akron. Just last month the Northeastern Ohio Synod's Women's Organization met, chaired by Faith member, Elaine Johnson.

    Faith Scouting Recognized

Several involved with Faith's Scout Troop 390 were recognized at the Old Portage District Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Dinner, April 19. Council President Bill Beers was reelected chair of the Old Portage District. He was also given the Cub Scouter Award and recognized for his 45 years as a Boy Scout. His wife Barbara was recognized for her 25 years. Faith member Charlotte Horvath wife and Assistant Scoutmaster to her husband Jim, our Scoutmaster, was recognized for 10 years. Jim was awarded a 15 year pin. Also recognized as the Assistant Scoutmaster of the Year was Steve Brustoski of our Troop 390 as well as Thomas Portteus, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster of the Year. Pastor Stan was recognized as the Chartered Organization Executive of the Year. All in all, Faith Lutheran Church can be very proud of its Scout Troop 390 and Cub Scout 3390 particularly it's quality leadership.

    WORSHIP MINISTRY

Butterflies remind us "Lord You Are My Hope." The butterflies, a symbol of the resurrection, have replaced the Lenten Crosses on the Prayer Banner. We are filled with the secure hope that the same Lord who resurrected Jesus and saves us, is listening to our prayers and is attentive to our needs. Use the paper butterflies in the basket by the banner to add your prayers to the "Come Unto Me" prayer banner which will be in use all the Easter season.

    EXPLORER CLUB

The Explorer Club's year-end finale is just around the corner!

On Sunday, May 20th, Explorers will celebrate Explorer Club Sunday with the congregation as part of the Light Service. To accomodate the crowd, the service will be moved to the sanctuary.

Explorer Club Sunday will be an important day for the Faith Lutheran family; it will be a day of sharing. May 20th is the day Explorers celebrate the year by sharing a few favorite hymns, re-live a few memories caught on video, and tell some favorite Bible stories.

We will also honor those Explorers who will receive attendance awards and service angels for outstanding achievements. Please join us on Sunday, May 20th, and celebrate our children!

    Adult Sunday School

Beginning at 9:15 a.m. Sundays in the Library, the following topics have been scheduled:

May 6: Who are the Episcopalians? (a video produced for Lutherans) We members of the ELCA are improving relationships with our Episcopal brothers and sisters in Christ. Based on a video and study guide prepared by the Department for Ecumenical Affairs of the ELCA, we will review the early history of the Anglican/Episcopal Church, some of the differences, and "things in common" that Lutherans and Episcopalians share. Sara and Jim Shook will lead the discussions.

May 13: Early church in Asia Minor (a slide program by Richard Sefton) In A.D. 50, most people of Asia Minor were living in sin and depravity and were worshipping many gods. They were confused and wished to know the truth. Missionaries such as Paul, Barnabas, Mark, Silas, and John traveled throughout Asia Minor and converted many to Christianity. As a result, by the middle of the second century, over half the people of Asia Minor were Christians. In the twentieth century, while visiting places in the modern-day country of Turkey, Dick Sefton took photographs in Pergamum, Ephesus, Cappadocia, and other sites where those early missionaries traveled. Join us to view his slides and interpretations of those sites. All interested adults are welcome to attend.

May 20: NO CLASS (classes will resume in September.)

    Our Shepherding Program

    New Member Sponsor

It is an important decision to join a church. Incoming members are entering a new phase of their spiritual journey. The Holy spirit's work is the major reason people join a congregation: but programs, people and activities influence where they join. Sponsors provide support to new members by shepherding them into the life of the congregation.

After people are received into membership in Faith with their Sponsors standing with them, the sponsors continue their support by (1) praying for the new members, (2) getting to know them to discover their needs, and (3) by seeking to involve the new member in congregational activities.

New members need a friend, need to be understood, need to be wanted, need to be invited to participate, and need to be included in all phases of the life of Faith Lutheran. They provide Faith with new ideas and further growth. Shepherding sponsors provide a way of entrance, welcoming and nurturing for new members.

    Lutheran Marriage Encounter

    What is Marriage Encounter?

Marriage Encounter begins as a weekend experience designed to help married couples communicate more intimately with one another in order to deepen and enrich their relationship. The weekend is orderly and informative, to give couples the opportunity to look into themselves and their relationships with each other and with God, while enjoying time away from the ususal responsibilities.

For whom is Marriage Encounter intended?

A Marriage Encounter Weekend is for married persons who love each other and who desire to better their communication and marriage - for those with good communication, to deepen it; for those with poor communication, to improve it. The Weekend is not for therapy or major problem-solving agendas. If you value your marriage, this is for you.

What happens on an Encounter Weekend?

A team of four couples (one of whom is a Lutheran pastor and spouse) presents a series of talks related to various aspects of marriage to a group of 20-30 married couples on a special weekend which lasts from Friday evening to early Sunday evening. Each talk is followed by questions for personal reflection. Then, in the privacy of their own room, couples dialogue on their reflections to better understand each other and to build new patterns of listening. You will be invited to concentrate on your spouse to such an extent that you will hardly be aware of the other couples. Although the presentations are given to the group, there is NO group discussion.

    What is the cost?

A non-refundable $45 registration fee is required to ensure a reservation. During the Weekend, each couple will be invited to give a confidential contribution. No one has ever been refused the opportunity to attend because of a lack of funds. There is no paid staff for Lutheran Marriage Encounter. It is a labor of love and is entirely self-supporting.

    Faith Flashlight Band

Faith Flashlight Band at 4th of July Parade

Last year, the Flashlight Band made its debut in the Fairlawn 4th of July Parade. Along with the Faith Explorers, who marched in the parade and passed out candy, they came home with the second place trophy for best musical entry! It was a real rush for the band to hear and see so many people along the route singing along to the songs and clapping their hands.

We want you to get that feeling, too! We are preparing for this year's float and we need people that are interested in designing, decorating, or participating in this Outreach Activity. We would also love to have parents of the Faith Explorers or youth join us to discuss ideas about making this an even better event than it was last year. We would like to have a meeting by Mid-May, so please sign up to help or contact Chris Sears for more information.

    THANK YOU'S

    Dear Members,

Thank you so much for the delicious soup your church members provide to Ridgewood Rd. Hospicee. My mother was brought into this wonderful facility on Monday, April 9. Since that day, the family members of Muriel Weinberger have enjoyed both the beef noodle and the chicken rice soup. As I write this, Mom is still with us and I hope to enjoy many more spoonfuls of this delicious soup. Please accept this donation to help offset your expences and allow your members to continue this wonderful service.

    Sincerely, Gail Mendelson

    - and -

    Dear Friends,

On behalf of the board of Trustees and staff of Summit County Children's Services, thank you for your generous donation of Easter baskets that benefited the abused and neglected children of Summit County.

Your donation this Easter season was used to provide items that cannot be purchased with tax dollars for the children. The agency provided 300 Easter baskets for Protective and Intake families. Through donations such as yours, the children and their families know there are people in this community who care about their well-being.

Again, thank you for your kind donation and interest in the children and families we serve.

Sincerely, Carolyn Felton, MBA, Volunteer Program Specialist
