    Adult Learning Life Group

    1) ADULT SUNDAY LEARNING LIFE meets once a week at 9:15 a.m. in the Library. "Honoring Our Neighbor's Faith" is their subject this year using a book by the same title as their primary discussion guide. In May, they plan to discuss Judaism.

This LIFE Group's planned specific topics are:

May 5: "History of Judaism After Christianity Began" - Jewish history will be traced beginning about 30 A.D. with the development of a new Jewish sect founded by a Nazarene. Other milestones that will be discussed include the second Jerusalem temple destroyed by the Romans, the Simon bar Kochba rebels fall to the Romans, dispersion of the Jews, writing down of the Talmud (prayers, quotations by Rabbis, legal rulings, explanation of the Torah [law], and commentary on them), Jews expelled from Spain, mass emigration to America, State of Israel declared, and the first woman Rabbi ordained.

May 12: "Judaism Today" - The modern movements of Judaism (Reform, Orthodox, Conservative, and Reconstructionism) will be discussed. Judaiam will be compared to the ELCA. The comparisons will be made based on their teachings, types of worship, governments, and other characteristics.

May 19 and 26: NO MEETINGS OF THIS LIFE GROUP

In addition to the book, Honoring Our Neighbor's Faith, which was published by Augsburg-Fortress, this Life Group is using several other resources to prompt discussion including videotapes, audiotapes, and internet sites. On Future Sundays in the Fall, the group plans to learn about many other faiths including the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church, and various Protestant denominations and to compare each of them with the ELCA.

This Life Group is led by Sara and Jim Shook. Join them for one hour on Sunday mornings. All adults are welcome to attend.

    2) Women's Beginnings Prayer Group: Denise Henkel is gathering this women's prayer and study group around the kitchen table on Mondays or Wednesdays, depending on member availability. They have coffee and bread or muffins. Children may come too. They are currently meeting around the topic "The Measure of A Woman," by Lisa Bevere. This group is especially for women who have flexible work schedules or are at home with children. Call her for details at 668-4039 (Denise) or 867-5469 (Cherli).

What's new for the 7th/8th grade group? A new Life Group, that's what! At 9:15 a.m. each Sunday, the 7th/8th graders meet at the courtyard windows, near the church office. This Life group connects Bible scripture to everyday life. It's an interactive, informal gathering that helps kids connect to God and to each other.

We have been blessed with volunteers that change monthly: Beth Strimple, Pat Gsellman, Randy Cole, Tim Bullock, John Dietrich and John Daily, Bruce Lightle. Thank you all for making a difference!

    THANK YOU

Mr. Leo Boes from Leo's Ark shared his talents and knowledge with Explorer Club members in April. His ability to hold the attention of all ages in large groups (while managing his animals!) is simply amazing. Cool. On April 12th, Mr. Leo shared that appeal to the younger Explorers. Animals: the Honey bear, the 10 foot python, the alligator. Very Cool. Mr. Leo's visit on April 28th for the older group included the albino Bermese python, Herbie the monkey, the sugar glider, an Amazon parrot, and an assortment of lizards. Very cool. We are so grateful for Mr. Leo's time and energies. Explorers thoroughly enjoy the time with Leo's Ark. For anyone having questions or planning a special party, Leo's Ark can be reached at leosark@neo.rr.com 0r 330-849-0354 or www.leosark.bigstep.com

    OPEN-M Summit County Children's Services

    Summit County Children's Services

Most parenting experts will stress the importance of giving children boundaries, so that they learn what they may and may not do. But for many children the word "boundaries" means something else entirely. Their "boundaires" are not the caring and thoughtful restrictions of loving parents. Instead, these "boundaries" are the ones created by an ongoing cycle of poverty, abuse, and neglect. These boundaries do not protect, do not teach, do not enlighten and do not care. Children's Services has worked hard to break down walls and let the light shine on children who have only seen darkness. Children's Services attempts to change THEIR world. They help them to find a future that is far different from the painful past that many of them have known. Ongoing programs and new initiatives give new hope and open windows to the children in their care.

They are committed to finding safe, permanent homes for children at risk by working with family members and community organizations. An important part of "The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1977" is time. Expedient and permanent placement is a top priority. They have revised the intake procedures and reduced the paperwork to streamline and provide immediate help.

A growing trend in recent years is the number of children who have found homes with grandparents and other relatives. Familiar and comfortable surroundings are important to children and they work hard with new caregivers to help them succeed.

Safe Place, created in December 2000, works directly with area hospitals, and the County Prosecutor to address the problem of abandonment of newborns. It is a confidential, non-threatening, and safe alternative that places the well-being of the infant above potential criminal charges against mothers who are unable to care for their new babies.

Children's Services helps children escape the boundaries of fear and ignorance and expand their horizons to see the world of possibilities that is open to them.

    • Carpet installation on the first floor hallways, during the week of July 29.
    • Addition of a bathroom in room "D" upper level of the education wing, after May 20.
    • Parking lot and driveway sealing and striping August 6, 7, 8

    Soup for Hospice

March 30, 2002 Re: Soup for Hospice Program Donation

    Dear Jean Nouse,

On September 24, 2001. my mother, Eleanor H. Agan Otto, was taken to the Hospice facility in Copley. My husband and I had cared for my mother for many years and for the last six months of her life she resided in our home. We did not know exactly what to expect at the facility, but one of the first things we were shown, was the kitchen and told to help ourselves to your wonderful soup. (The soup of the day at that time was chicken noodle.) We also read the wonderful plaque in the kitchen about how this program was started.

Mother joined our Lord on the 26th of September and we have never forgotten the soup in your kitchen. So, my husband, who is on the Board at our home church, spoke to them about your wonderful outreach program, how it started, etc. Therefore, our church (Christ Lutheran Church of Massillon, Ohio) decided to send you this donation, in memory of my mother, in the hope that it will help defray the cost of your monthly soup donation.

At a time like that, it is very comforting to know that people who we do not, nor ever will know, that there are those out there who truly care. In our prayers we often say "Lord, please bless this food and the hands that have prepared it." In this case, all of you.

Thank you for your outpouring of love toward those who desperately need it at a very difficult time. We will never forget you.

    In Christ,

Ken and Sharon Steffee of Christ Lutheran Church .Massillon, OH 44646

    Thank You

    And

To all those who participated in making Easter Baskets on Sunday March 10. 106 Easter baskets were filled with candies and toys and taken to Children Services for distribution. Generous donations from the youth, Faith Lutheran Preschool, Debbie Gottas and Vee Robinson made this possible! Start saving empty baskets for next Easter. Your help makes my job easier!!!!! Photo Op

Faith Lutheran Church has a terrific photo op for its members! After more that 10 years since our present church directory was assembled, Faith has entered into an agreement with LifeTouch to publish a new directory. Photos as well as addresses of our current members will be included. What a wonderful resource for our church members as well as for Pastor Jean. Beginning in June, each Faith family will be asked to sign up for a photo session. Be thinking now of what day & time would be good for you. Sessions will be scheduled Thursday, July 18 and Friday, July 19 from 4-9, Saturday, July 20 from 10-4, Thursday, August 8 and Friday, August 9 from 4-9 and Saturday, August 10th from 10-4. Several poses will be taken during the session and you will be able to view and make your selection immediately. Each family will receive a free church directory and a complimentary 8 x 10 photograph as well as the opportunity to order additional packages for family and friends. In talking to members of another church who used this company, they indicated that they were extremely pleased with the photos and the lack of any high pressure sales.

In addition, the committee is looking for photos depicting life at Faith to be included in the introductory pages. These would include pictures of such activities as Explorers Club, Adult Sunday School, Confirmation, Clara's Club, Youth Group activities, WELCA, Music groups, Flashlight Band, Rally Day, Lay Weeders, Garden Club, Soup Ministry, Busy Fingers, Pre School, Boy Scouts, Open M Ministry, and many more. If you have fairly recent pictures that you feel should be considered for the introductory pages, please lend them to Barb Beers to be scanned into the computer so we can have the best possible pictures telling Faith's story. All pictures will be returned to you. Please call Barb at 330-869-0864 or mail pictures to 2084 Brookshire Rd, Akron, OH 44313 or leave them in our box at church.

Please plan your summertime schedule to allow time for a photo to be included in this directory. Remember, the only way to be guaranteed your copy of the directory is to participate. We need you to make our directory complete!
