  • WE SAY YES

Calling all children and youth "WE SAY YES" to you On Commitment Sunday, October 3

This year's stewardship emphasis wraps up with a special emphasis as, "We say yes…to faith-filled children and youth." On this important day the Explorers' Club will visit the 9:15 a.m. service for a time of special recognition and youth in grades 7-12 will be the worship leaders at the 10:45 a.m. service.

And "We say yes …to God" during the services on October 3 as the congregation completes Estimate of Giving cards for 2005 and brings them forward as an act of worship.

    WELCA

    SUNDAY - October 10

On Sunday, October 10, the officers of our Faith Unit of WELCA will be installed at the 8 a.m. service. President, Jean Butler; Vice President, Bettemae Ramsey; Secretary, Marlene Unger; and Treasurer, Wanda Hare will accept leadership responsibilities.

Faith Unit of Women of the ELCA welcomes all women to be a part of our activities, service projects and meetings. The national theme "Listen, God Is Calling" challenges us "to mobilize to act boldly on our faith in Jesus Christ." We meet to nurture our faith, have fun and share our spiritual gifts, abilities and blessings. WELCA Sunday emphasizes that we are a place for all women of the church. Remember, every woman of Faith Lutheran Church is a member of WELCA.

    Year of the Child!

On a sultry Tuesday evening twelve people gathered to discuss children. We talked about moving beyond Explorer's Club and what we might provide to help our kids at Faith learn how to have God in their lives every day. Some ideas include starting a junior and cherub choir, having mid week or weekend clubs for kids grades 3 - 5, and having our high school youth interact with our younger students.

We also talked about moving beyond the walls of Faith to help children in need. We are excited about the possibility of partnering with Summit County Children Services Board to provide parties and workshops for some of their foster children. Not only does this help the kids, but gives needed respite to the foster or kinship families.

Many wonderful ideas were generated. We know that God honors reaching out, and that we should go and help His people.

Sincerely, Connie Humble, Executive Director, Children's Services Board

    Thank You

In a letter from Pastor Borsay to Pastor Jean following the visit from Calvary Lutheran Church youth choir and the special offering.

    Thank You

Thank you dearly for your gift. You and your people are very warm. Personally, that was the first time I have experienced such warmth in a Lutheran church. Most of my young people are just beginning school; they are high school age but practically elementary and illiterate. The war set them back. Their mothers are also illiterate and alone with them. We are restarting our tutoring program. My prayer is that they stay on the right course and in community. I wish I could individually thank all of your people. May the Lord continue to bless you richly!

While we were not able to contact all our members, we did contact about 90% of those that have their telephone number listed in the church's directory.

I do thank the good Lord and Carolyn Wager for the excellent turn out for this ministry. We had some new and some fairly new members attend. I was inspired by these individuals' willingness to commit their time and talents. However, the most inspirational was a non-member, who has visited our worship services and some other classes who volunteered to participate in this ministry. I do want to thank all those that did participate.

    Calling Event

On Thursday, September 9, 18 members of the congregation attempted to call all other members during the Faith Fellowship Calling event. Their goal was to share God's love, to ask How are you doing?", and to remind them of the "Rally Day" events at our church. Some volunteers called from church and some called from home. All callers were asked to relay any concerns to me so they could be passed on to the appropriate person.

Our next calling event is Thursday, December 16 at 6:30 p.m. Please mark this on your calendar and consider assisting in this ministry. If there are any questions, please contact me at 330-867-4946.

With gratitude, Bill Pope, Team Leader

    Benefit Dinner

    Lutheran Neighbors Host Benefit Dinner

A benefit dinner for Fred Wiedmann, a member of St. John/St. Paul Lutheran Church in Akron, will be held from Noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 in the gym at that church, 282 W. Bowery St.

The menu is: ham, scalloped potatoes, yams, green beans, coleslaw, cranberry sauce, dessert and drink. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children age 6-12. There is no charge for children age 5 and younger.

Mr. Wiedmann has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and is unable to work. While he has medical insurance to cover a portion of the cost, funds are needed for co-payments and day-to-day living expenses.

The congregation's Fellowship Committee and Thrivant Branch are hosting this event.

    Library - Face Lift

As summer ended the church library underwent a major revamping and cleaning. Here's what happened:

    * Every item was removed from the book cases and cabinets and sorted. * Every book case, cabinet, window and all items returned to the shelves received a good cleaning.* The wall was painted. * The WELCA (Women of the ELCA) book exchange was moved to the library book cases. * With the exception of the WELCA section, every book, video and audio tape on the shelves was entered into the church computer.

NOW that all is in order … to borrow a book from the library please:

    * Locate the folder that contains the sign-out sheets. The library cards in the books will no longer be used. * List your name, the title of the item and the date it was borrowed. * When the item is returned, please note the date on the sign-out sheet. * Upon return, please place the item in the appropriate section. If you do not remember where it goes, please leave it on the table for the staff to reshelf.

A copy of the library book, video, audio tape list is in the folder; items are listed alphabetically within topic headings Special note: PLEASE do not donate items to the library without first checking with the church office. This is so that the computerized list of the library's contents can be kept current. Also, a list will soon be available of new materials that people may purchase and donate to the church library. This will make it a more useable resource for everyone. Many thanks are expressed to Dana Singer for her help with this project.

    December

Remember the great food and fellowship of our Lenten season? Let's enjoy that again as we prepare for the arrival of the baby Jesus. This year during Advent, we will have "Wonderful Wednesdays during Delightful December". Each Wednesday night in December (December 1,8,15, and 22) we will have a meal together followed by special learning and conversational opportunities for children and adults and conclude each Wonderful Wednesday with a short worship experience. Tentative time schedule for this Advent adventure will be meal at 6:15, "classes" from 6:45 - 7:40 and closing devotions at 7:45.

Our "Wonderful Wednesdays" will culminate on December 29 with a Christmas Party!

We realize that December is a super busy month for people and so it seems very appropriate that we take time each week to focus on preparing to welcome the Christ-child. By making fellowship time and worship a priority during Advent, you will be helping to place the events of the season in their proper perspective.

So flip open your calendar to December, set aside Wednesday evenings, and stay tuned for more details!
